Perhaps best known for their feature on Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home", Majid Jordan is a Canadian R&B Duo with a sound all their own. Consisting of Singer, Majid Al Maskati, and producer Jordan Ullman, Majid Jordan was formed in 2011 while the duo attended the University of Toronto. Originally known as "Good People", Majid Jordan released their afterhours EP on Soundcloud in 2013 which got them noticed by Drake's music label OVO Sound. Shortly after, the duo would be signed to OVO sound and went to work, Co-producing and being featured on Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home", the biggest hit on Drake's Nothing Was The Same.
While the duo's self titled debut album charted better, Majid Jordan's sophomore album, The Space Between, is the crown jewel of their discography (MJ released their third album, Wildest Dreams, in 2021). My first exposure to this album came from the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2018 menswear collection show in June of 2017, where they dropped a track called "Gave Your Love Away". It was released alongside the Drake song "Signs", which I had tuned into the show to hear.
The Space Between would later release in October of 2017 and would be well received by critics and the public alike. The album would chart as high as 30 on the Canadian albums chart and 74 on the Billboard 200. This album has an infectious sound that is dark yet uplifting and features sentimental yet easy to digest lyrics. OVO labelmates PartyNextDoor ("One I Want") and DVSN ("My Imagination") are the lone features on this album, but they both add value.
This album is strong from beginning to end and is best listened to uninterrupted, but plenty of the tracks can stand alone, especially "Gave Your Love Away", "OG Heartthrob" and "Body Talk". This is not a relatively well-known album, but it's one of my personal favorites. With both strong production and vocals, you'd be hard-pressed to find a smoother album that sounds as unique as this one. Give this album a try, you won't regret it.
